The Pacific plot

We follow Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone, three US Marines of the First Marine Division. Their lives are intertwined against the background of the battle in the Pacific during the Second World War. We see them from their first battles against the Japanese on Guadalcanal, the landing at Cape Gloucester, the Battle of Peleliu. Standing on the bloody beach of Iwo Jima, they survived the horrors of Okinawa and made the long-awaited but uneasy return after Japan's surrender.

The Pacific is gewoon ondergewaardeerd. Je hoort altijd dat BoB beter is, maar de serie is gewoon compleet anders. Maar er kan niet ontkent worden dat de actie nog intensiever in beeld wordt gebracht en de uitdieping van de personages gewoon een stuk beter is (bronmateriaal leent zich er ook beter voor). Wat doet de oorlog met een mens? Hoe is de oorlog voor de mariniers na thuiskomst? Wat doen soldaten als ze niet vechten (verlof)? Zaken die misschien niet persé nodig zijn, maar wel een welkome afwisseling zijn. Ik mis een beetje die rustige momenten in BoB en the Pacific geeft mij dit wel. Ik kan niet lang genoeg naar het soort rustige afleveringen kijken zoals die in Australië, uiteraard ook de minst beoordeelde aflevering op IMDB. Ach... Dit is samen met BoB gewoon het beste wat je op oorlogsgebied kan krijgen. The Pacific doet echt niet onder! 4,5*

The Pacific is simply undervalued. You always hear that BoB is better, but the series is just completely different. But it cannot be denied that the action is portrayed even more intensively and the depth of the characters is just a lot better (source material is also better for it). What does war do to a person? What is the war like for the Marines after returning home? What do soldiers do when they are not fighting (leave)? Things that may not be necessary, but are a welcome change. I kind of miss those quiet moments in BoB and the Pacific gives me this. I can't watch long enough the kind of quiet episodes like the one in Australia, obviously also the least rated episode on IMDB.

Oh well... Together with BoB this is simply the best you can get in the war area. The Pacific really isn't inferior!

The Pacific is een goede serie over een in NL beetje onderbelicht theatre of war in WOII en daarom misschien juist wel interessanter om te bekijken dan Band of Brothers. De serie kent drie hoofdrolspelers Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge en John Basilone. Zoals mijn bovenbuurman meldt wordt de actie beter en intensiever in beeld gebracht dan bij Band of Brothers. Ook is de karakteruitdieping beter dan bij Band of Brothers maar toch ontbreekt er iets: cohesie en dat komt omdat de hoofdrolspelers elk in een andere eenheid zaten. Hierdoor switch je van hot naar her en daardoor had ik moeite om het verhaal te volgen. Het leek meer op Call of Duty dan een serie. Desondanks was het nog altijd een goede serie die een zeer belangrijk stuk uit WO II vertelde. Zeker het kijken waard! Mijn oordeel is Band of Brothers 4,0 en The Pacific 3,8 vanwege de minder vloeiende verhaalijn maar afgerond naar boven is dat ook een 4,0.

The Pacific is a good series about a somewhat underexposed theater of war in WWII in the Netherlands and therefore perhaps more interesting to watch than Band of Brothers. The series has three protagonists Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone. As my upstairs neighbor reports, the action is portrayed better and more intensively than with Band of Brothers. The character development is also better than with Band of Brothers, but something is still missing: cohesion and that is because the protagonists were each in a different unit. This makes you switch from hot to here and that made it difficult for me to follow the story. It was more like Call of Duty than a series. Nevertheless, it was still a good series that told a very important part of WWII. Definitely worth a look! My verdict is Band of Brothers 4.0 and The Pacific 3.8 because of the less fluid storyline, but rounded up it's also a 4.0.

Ik vond "The Pacific" minder dan "Band of Brothers". Dat kwam door het trage tempo, geen inleiding door de direct betrokkenen en veel gehakketak van plaatst. De afleveringen met in elk stadje een ander schatje konden mij gestolen worden. Acteur Malek bakt er niet van. Hij zorgt bij mij voor een enorme allergische jeuk. Absoluut ongeloofwaardig als soldaat. De rest van de cast vond ik prima. De CGI was op het randje. De bekende blauwgrijze platte wand. Heldenverering is niet te vermijden, maar wordt wel erg uitgemolken als het gaat om John Basilone. Het is een mislukte poging om meer drama in de serie te brengen. Slaapverwekkend. Als de titel is "The Pacific" is, dan had de rol van de Japanners ook meer belicht mogen worden. De gevechtsscènes vond ik prima. De beeldvoering trok je mee in de gevechten. Verder krijg je toch een idee hoe de Amerikanen en de Japanners zich hebben doodgevochten met het veroveren van eilandjes. Zinloos, als je bedenkt dat twee atoombommen zorgden voor de overgave door Japan.

I liked "The Pacific" less than "Band of Brothers". This was due to the slow pace, no introduction by those directly involved and a lot of squabbling of places. The episodes with a different sweetheart in each town could be stolen from me.

Actor Malek doesn't care. He gives me a huge allergic itching. Absolutely unbelievable as a soldier.

I liked the rest of the cast.

The CGI was on the brink. The well-known blue-grey flat wall.

Hero worship is unavoidable, but it is very much milked when it comes to John Basilone. It's a failed attempt to bring more drama to the series. Sleep inducing.

If the title is "The Pacific", then the role of the Japanese could have been more highlighted.

I liked the fight scenes. The imagery drew you into the fights.

You also get an idea of how the Americans and the Japanese fought to the death by conquering islands. Pointless, when you consider that two atomic bombs caused the surrender of Japan.
