Mr Bates vs the Post Office plot

Mr Bates vs The Post Office tells the story of one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history. Hundreds of innocent postal workers were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a faulty IT system. Many of the wronged workers were prosecuted, some of whom were imprisoned for crimes they never committed, and their lives were irreparably ruined by the scandal. Following the Court of Appeal's landmark decision to overturn their criminal convictions, dozens of former employees have been acquitted as they fought to finally clear their names. They have fought for more than a decade to finally prove their innocence and achieve a resounding victory, but everyone involved believes the fight is not over yet, not by a long shot.

After the first episode, the Prime Minister, among others, started working on it, this is really horrible. It is 25 years after the first report and politicians have known about this for a long time, so this is what a drama on TV can do. Luckily there was Mr Bates, because most of them were ordinary people with little money and knowledge to deal with this scandal that has destroyed their lives. The profits and the name of the company were more important...

Unbelievable so much "arbitrariness" from a government agency.

The miscarriages of justice are one thing, but the attitude of the Postal Service is undoubtedly criminal.

The common man with his back against the wall.

The series explains it all well, takes us from one outrage to the next, places the stakes of Mr. Bates and those who follow him are strongly in the spotlight, but despite being quoted several times, the social and financial consequences for the person affected are not sufficiently mentioned in concrete examples in the series.

Toby Jones is perfect for such a role.

The drama Mr. Bates vs The Post Office most resembles a British version of the benefits scandal. A - still - lingering issue. The four-part drama covers a time period of almost 20 years. That is ambitious, especially if the personal lives of some victims also have to be given a place. In that sense, Mr. Bates vs The Post Office unbalanced.

The central theme is recognizable; hardworking entrepreneurs and citizens are being crushed by the government and a state-owned company. And in this case also by a tech company. The rural British atmosphere is strongly emphasized. This sweetness and lightness does not always do justice to the magnitude and impact of the drama. Although sympathetically designed - from actors to scenario - the feeling of missed opportunity still lingers a bit.
