Because Molly has little time, there is no time to be picky. Molly courageously goes on a sexual adventure with her best friend Nikki, who is always there for her.

Dying for Sex is een achtdelige Amerikaanse serie gebaseerd op een podcast en geïnspireerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van Molly Kochan. Het uitgangspunt – een vrouw met uitgezaaide borstkanker gaat op seksuele ontdekkingstocht – klinkt origineel, maar de uitwerking valt tegen. De eerste helft voelt als een oppervlakkige, kluchtige opsomming van seksuele escapades, met af en toe een geslaagde grap. Pas na een paar afleveringen krijgt de serie meer gewicht. Dankzij het sterke spel van Jenny Slate als chaotische vriendin Nikki en Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) als Molly komt er ruimte voor echte emotie. De dynamiek tussen de twee vriendinnen tilt het verhaal naar een hoger niveau, met meer aandacht voor kwetsbaarheid, vriendschap en het omgaan met ziekte. Toch blijft de centrale vraag hangen: is dit de reis naar intimiteit die je in de laatste fase van je leven zou willen maken?

Dying for Sex is an eight-part American series based on a podcast and inspired by the true story of Molly Kochan. The premise – a woman with metastatic breast cancer goes on a sexual journey of discovery – sounds original, but the execution is disappointing. The first half feels like a superficial, farcical list of sexual escapades, with the occasional successful joke.

Only after a few episodes does the series gain more weight. Thanks to the strong performances of Jenny Slate as chaotic friend Nikki and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) as Molly, there is room for real emotion. The dynamic between the two friends lifts the story to a higher level, with more attention to vulnerability, friendship and dealing with illness. Still, the central question remains: is this the journey to intimacy that you would want to make in the last phase of your life?
