De Joodse Raad plot

Chairman of the Jewish Council David Cohen continues to move with the German occupier until the end 'to prevent worse.' In doing so, he unintentionally paves the way for the deportation of 100,000 Jewish Dutch people. His daughter Virrie, at the risk of her own life, allows hundreds of Jewish children to go into hiding and thus saves them from deportation. A story about a father and a daughter who increasingly lose each other in a world that only knows death and destruction.

An unusually good Dutch series, extremely impressive and acted with conviction. It is astonishing to see how the Jewish council, led by Asscher and Cohen, with the best of intentions, very naively allowed themselves to be pulled over by the Germans, assuming that in this way the deportation of the Jewish community in Amsterdam could be kept within limits. . It is also poignant to see how the Netherlands treated the returning Jews afterwards and appropriated items under the assumption that no owner would return. In short, a series that grabbed me by the throat and will continue to resonate for a while. Good for 4.5 stars for me.

Fantastic series about the Jewish Council during WWII. Everything is right about this series, but Pierre Bokma and Claire Bender especially excel.

A series that everyone should see!

The Jewish Council was the organization that formed the link between the German occupier and the Jewish community in Amsterdam in the early 1940s - and later for the whole of the Netherlands. In a sensitive script by Paul Jan Nelissen and Roos Ouwehand (Eyeballs) and directed by Paula van der Oest (Noord Zuid, The Split), the moving and dramatic history of the Jewish Council is told with nuance.

The finest stars of Dutch cinema perform overwhelmingly in this five-part series. In particular Pierre Bokma and Claire Bender. Bokma plays chairman David Cohen ('we do this to prevent worse'), Bender plays his daughter Virrie. The slow disintegration of family relationships is a beautiful storyline that makes the heartbreaking and impossible dilemmas and choices palpable.

This young classic is an impressive cinematic serial monument for the more than 100,000 Dutch Jewish victims in the period 1940 - 1945. The Jewish Council tells a story that is more current than you might hope.
