Bates Motel plot
Freddie Highmore is Norman Bates, a 17-year-old young man who, after the death of his father, moved with mother Norma Louise to the coastal Oregon town of White Pine Bay to start a new life. Mother Bates has bought the dilapidated Seafairer Motel to make a fresh start with her son. Norman befriends a group of schoolgirls on his first day of school. The same day they also meet the previous owner of the hotel, who comes to demand his property back.

Nice concept, in which Norman Bates' backstory is set in the present. It is a feast of recognition through the iconic locations. Freddie Highmore plays an increasingly better Norman as the series progresses, but it is Vera Farmiga who steals the show.
Unfortunately, the series sometimes feels very much like an MTV teen series and the subplots are often anything but interesting.

I have now watched another 5 episodes, but subtle is not in the makers' dictionary... there really could have been so much more if this had been better structured. Now I'm annoyed by the almost constant banter between Norma and Norman, while it could have been very nice if it had been done in better doses. But I'll persevere a little longer, because it's really not all bad. Half of it will certainly be lost.
