Definitely a must for anyone interested in movies, especially movie history. Mark Cousins takes you through all of history and no other documentary does this in more detail. Unlike many other documentaries, we see not only American film history, but also that of the rest of the world. After seeing this series you will have a good impression of which films or filmmakers were the start of new genres and movements.

But how annoyed I was with the narration of Mark Cousins! It's ridiculous that he couldn't just ask someone else, someone with emotion, to record these episodes. In addition, some episodes are quite difficult to follow if you are not familiar with the films from India or Africa, for example.

Interesting documentary about film history, full of film images based on the book by director and narrator Mark Cousins. This Northern Irishman must have seen thousands of movies, he has a very wide, intercontinental and interlinear view.

The documentary is roughly categorized by decade. It starts with the origin of the film (Lumiere, Wattson) and ends with films like 'mulholland drive' and 'inception'. Many hours are also spent in film areas less known to us, such as South America, Africa, Russia and Asia.

At the same time, Cousins associates wildly and, for example, a 21st century film is smoothly switched to a 19th century early work. This reveals his immensely in-depth knowledge. However, this sometimes goes too far.

Another downside I think is that movies are sometimes spilled. He sometimes tells how a movie ends (because that makes it interesting) and sometimes even shows it. I think that's a shame, although I also see that those are interesting pieces.

Because at least 300 different films are reviewed, it often remains a bit superficial. Logically, one director also gets more attention than the other. Cousins is clearly a fan of Ozu who is mentioned almost every episode. The name Kubrick is in my opinion far too little.

By the way, I found the Northern Irish accent funny and got used to it quickly.
