Food for Thought plot

Where does our food come from? Where is it going? What route does it take from production to our plate? In this four-part series, photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen, together with director Doke Romeijn, searches for the world behind the food on our plates in the US, China, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The series brings into focus what often remains outside our field of view.

Dat er in de landbouw van alles mis zit is zo langzamerhand wel iedereen duidelijk, en de beelden in deze documentaire doen daar nog een stevige schep bovenop. Sowieso is het idee dat de gemiddelde maaltijd meer kilometers gereisd heeft dan veel mensen in hun leven zullen doen al te absurd voor woorden. Toch vond ik de documentaire als geheel erg teleurstellend. De focus op het buitenland maakt er een ver-van-mijn-bed show van, terwijl we ook weten dat vooral Nederland voorop loopt met hoe doorgedraaid de landbouw is. Maar ook de hele stijl en presentatie wasemt een enorm sterke Hilversumse spruitjeslucht uit, allemaal erg braaf in de tradities en strak in de leer. De tussendoor gehanneste beelden van Van Lohuizen doen het voor mij ook niet - gemakzuchtig in zijn gewone stijltje. Mooi hoor, doe nog maar eens.

It is gradually becoming clear to everyone that there are many things wrong in agriculture, and the images in this documentary add to that. In any case, the idea that the average meal has traveled more miles than many people will in a lifetime is too absurd for words.

Still, I found the documentary as a whole very disappointing. The focus on foreign countries makes this a far-fetched show, while we also know that the Netherlands in particular is leading the way in terms of how crazy agriculture is. But the entire style and presentation also exudes a very strong Hilversum Brussels sprout smell, all very respectable in the traditions and strict in the teachings. Van Lohuizen's fiddly images don't do it for me either - lazy in his usual style. Nice, do it again.
