Before We Was We: Madness by Madness plot

This documentary tells the story of the rise of one of the biggest and most famous British bands: Madness. This piece of music history is told through original footage and interviews with band members including Chris Foreman, Mike 'Barso' Barson, Lee 'Thommo' Thompson, Graham 'Suggs' McPherson, Daniel 'Woody' Woodgate, Mark 'Bedders' Bedford and Carl 'Chas Smash' Smyth. They talk about their forty-year career with Madness, which took place against the background of the ska, punk and new wave revolution. Shot during a period of cultural and political upheaval, this documentary also provides an insight into a post-war Britain, changed beyond recognition as the band topped the music charts.

Formed in 1976 as 'Morris And The Minors', locally known as 'The Invaders' and after a few line-up changes and the realization that there was already a band with the same name, these seven former troublemakers in 1979 a remarkably fast breakthrough with the singles 'The Prince' and the legendary 'One Step Beyond'. More than 40 years later, Madness is still performing in its original line-up. With the wisdom of years, the men look back on the period that preceded the success. They paint a picture of a hopeless youth in a depressing environment, the rebellious, antisocial behavior that was partly the result of this and how music (in their case mainly ska) offered them and their fans an opportunity to escape the daily worries. Except for the segment about the groundbreaking tour with 'The Specials' and 'The Selecter', this story was already told in the amusing autobiographical film Take It Or Leave It from 1981, so there isn't much new under the sun . But the wisdom of years put things in a slightly different perspective.
