The Staircase plot

Kathleen was reported dead by Michael in 2001 after falling down the stairs. This is said to have happened after she had consumed alcohol and Valium. Soon, Michael was found guilty, leading to a lawsuit that made headlines and revealed secrets about the two's relationship. In 2003, Michael was finally convicted. Eight years after his initial conviction, he admitted that the evidence would convince many of his guilt, but maintained his innocence. His sentence was reduced as a result: he was no longer suspected of murder, but of manslaughter, and was therefore immediately released.

The somewhat twisted writer Michael is played well by Colin Firth. His double agenda is on the table. What a shock that must have been for his ex and children. I found them to be quite relaxed about it. Within the family, all kinds of disturbed relationships also appear to play a role. So there are more layers in the series. That doesn't always make it easy to follow.

Gradually it becomes more and more clear what happened before and on the day of Kathleen's death. All kinds of scenarios are reviewed. At some point you don't know what's true anymore.

Furthermore, it is a court series. The crazy American jury system in which it turns out that it is only about influencing the jury as much as possible. Expensive lawyers who do nothing.

All in all, great entertainment. Not a binge watcher for me.

The eight-part The Staircase is a true crime drama in a layered scenario with fantastic acting. The Staircase sheds light on the life of Michael Peterson (a sublime Colin Firth) and the suspicious death of his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette). In an in-depth report we get to know Michael and his family. A meticulous reconstruction follows, as we recently saw in Presumed Innocent. The series constantly - and excessively - changes in time with flashbacks and forwards.

Michael Peterson is narcissistic, moody, unpleasant, dominant and aggressive. But is he guilty? The Staircase is a biopic, a courtroom and prison drama and a conspiracy thriller, but never becomes top-heavy due to its pleasant pace and lively characters. This is a masterclass in storytelling. There is no truth without lies.
