The six-part British revenge drama The Beast Must Die (TBMD) has a kickstart. After a hit and run accident that kills her son, Frances Cairnes (Cush Jumbo) seeks revenge. The first episode is fast paced, captivating and sets out several storylines. TBMD is about grief and grief, and about the different effect this can have on people. For example, when you are privileged, or not. However, this quintessentially English drama soon sinks in, and only the actors keep the series worth watching.
Billy Howle plays Adjutant Strangeways and does a great job. We know Howle from The Serpent (as Herman (K)nippenberg) and as a tormented son from MotherFatherSon. This is a top actor. There is also nothing wrong with the setting, the Isle of Wight. It provides beautiful Southern English images of cliffs, rolling meadows and sea. So much for the good news.
I have a few issues with TBMD. First, it doesn't get exciting or dramatic anywhere. It remains very nice. Especially when the company moves to an old country house (you know: broken family, hedonistic lifestyle, old money), it becomes tame, predictable and boring. Secondly, a number of sidelines in the story are not completed, but are left hanging in the void. Somewhere above Wight.
The Beast Must Die suggests in the title to be an exciting revenge thriller, but it turns out to be deadly boring.

I totally agree with Suitehome. Not bad but there are much better British series. I especially had a hard time with the credibility, it may be a film, but I still like a little credibility. Someone follows an ordinary weekday woman to write a book about and follows them everywhere .... There is also far too little pepper in the series. Indeed Howle is a fantastic actor and I have always been a fan of Nathaniel Parker. I thought the most beautiful is the beautiful Isle of Wight, what an ugly country we live in....
