Friends is inmiddels met het grootste gemak uitgegroeid tot mijn favoriete serie, maar ik moet wel zeggen dat ik dit het minst sterke seizoen vond sinds het eerste. Dat heeft eerder te maken met enkele keuzes die gemaakt worden in het verhaal en niet zozeer met de humor, want die vind ik nog steeds fantastisch. Ik maak niet gauw mee bij een serie dat ik meermaals per aflevering hardop moet lachen, maar Friends weet dit gewoon telkens opnieuw klaar te spelen. In seizoen 8 kon de Joey-Rachel verhouding er nog wel mee door. Dat kwam met name doordat Matt LeBlanc de plotselinge gevoelens die Joey overvielen geloofwaardig wist te brengen. Dat Rachel hier opeens ook gevoelens krijgt voor Joey n.a.v. een droom, lijkt echter een beetje uit de lucht gegrepen. Ook de hele rol van Charlie ligt niet helemaal lekker in dit verband. De chemie tussen haar en Joey is er nooit, dus waarom Charlie pas zo laat besluit dat dit niks gaat worden, is niet helemaal duidelijk. Het brengt alleen maar de vriendschap tussen Joey en Ross in gevaar en ik snap niet goed waarom dit het geval moet zijn. Wat ik persoonlijk ook een minpunt vond, was dat David tot twee keer toe opnieuw opduikt in dit seizoen; een personage dat ik al in het eerste seizoen om de één of andere reden niet leuk vond. Godzijdank dat de schrijvers er op het einde voor kiezen om verder te gaan met de relatie tussen Phoebe en Mike. Het komt er dus op neer dat dit seizoen verhaaltechnisch zo nu en dan een beetje rommelig aanvoelt; iets dat ik bij de eerdere seizoenen nergens ervaren heb. Hopelijk krijgen ze dit in het tiende seizoen weer terug op het oude niveau. Gelukkig zorgen de humor en de fijne onderlinge chemie van het zestal er in ieder geval voor dat geen enkele aflevering niet leuk is. Hierdoor hoef ik ook geen cijfer onder de vier sterren te geven, want daarvoor heb ik me simpelweg te zeer vermaakt. Ik vind het jammer dat het er bijna opzit... 4*

Friends has since easily become my favorite series, but I have to say that I found this to be the weakest season since the first. That has more to do with some choices that are made in the story and not so much with the humor, because I still think it's fantastic. I don't often experience a series that makes me laugh out loud several times per episode, but Friends just manage to do this over and over again.

In season 8, the Joey-Rachel relationship was still going strong. This was mainly because Matt LeBlanc was able to bring credence to the sudden feelings that overtook Joey. That Rachel suddenly also gets feelings for Joey after a dream, however, seems a bit out of the blue. The whole role of Charlie is also not entirely comfortable in this regard. The chemistry between her and Joey is never there, so why Charlie decides so late that this isn't going to work is not entirely clear. It only jeopardizes the friendship between Joey and Ross and I don't understand why this should be the case. What I personally also found to be a minus was that David reappeared twice in this season; a character I didn't like in the first season for some reason. Thank goodness the writers chose to continue with Phoebe and Mike's relationship in the end.

So the bottom line is that this season from a storytelling point of view feels a bit messy at times; something that I have not experienced anywhere in the previous seasons. Hopefully they get this back to the old level in the tenth season. Fortunately, the humor and the fine mutual chemistry of the six ensure that no episode is not fun. Because of this I don't have to give a rating below four stars, because I simply had too much fun for that. I'm sad it's almost over...

Het minst beoordeelde seizoen hier op MovieMeter, en ik snap heel goed waarom. Voor mij is dit ook een iets minder seizoen, los van dat ik het nog steeds een fantastische show vind, vanwege Chandler. Hij is uitgegroeid van de clown van de groep naar het lulletje van de groep. De herhaalde grappen over zijn vrouwelijke kant werden erg irritant. Hopelijk corrigeren zij dat volgend seizoen. Daarentegen vond ik Phoebe, Joey en Ross juist veel leuker dan voorgaand seizoen. Het kijktempo ligt hoog aangezien Friends over twee weken van Netflix verdwijnt, maar waarschijnlijk ga ik het laatste seizoen nog net redden.

The least-rated season here on MovieMeter, and I totally understand why. This is also a slightly less season for me, apart from the fact that I still think it's a fantastic show, because of Chandler. He has grown from the clown of the group to the dick of the group. The repeated jokes about his feminine side became very annoying. Hopefully they correct that next season. On the other hand, I liked Phoebe, Joey and Ross much more than last season.

The viewing pace is high as Friends disappears from Netflix in two weeks, but I'm probably just going to save the last season.

Ik ben in mijn zoveelste herziening alweer bij seizoen 9 aanbeland, en Friends blijft na al die jaren mijn favoriete serie. Na seizoen 5 ging het wel een beetje bergafwaarts. De vele verhaallijnen omtrent trouwen en baby's krijgen zijn onnodig zoetsappig en ongrappig. Ook de eeuwige aan- en uit relatie tussen Ross en Rachel wordt op de duur vervelend. Van seizoen 7 begint Chandler opvallende problemen met zijn gewicht te vertonen en hij lijkt (door zijn drug- en alcoholproblemen IRL) vaak afwezig voor zich uit te staren. In seizoen 9 lijkt hij terug wat meer aanwezig te zijn. Maar sinds zijn relatie met Monica is hij toch minder grappig dan toen hij single was, en vaak komt hij melig en als een watje of pantoffelheld over. De reünie tenslotte, hier vreemd genoeg als 11de seizoen aangeduid, is totaal overbodig, de meeste van de Friends (behalve Matt LeBlanc dan) herinneren zich opvallend weinig van de show. Je kunt dan beter naar de bloobers kijken die je makkelijk op YouTube kunt terugvinden. Die zijn (bijna) net zo grappig als de serie zelf!

I'm back to season 9 in my umpteenth review, and Friends remains my favorite series after all these years. Things went downhill after season 5. The many storylines about getting married and having babies are unnecessarily bland and unfunny. The eternal on and off relationship between Ross and Rachel also becomes annoying in the long run. By Season 7, Chandler begins to show noticeable issues with his weight, and (due to his drug and alcohol problems IRL) often seems absent-minded. In season 9 he seems to be a bit more present again. But since his relationship with Monica, he's less funny than when he was single, and often comes across as corny and like a wimp or slipper hero. Finally, the reunion, oddly enough referred to here as the 11th season, is completely unnecessary, most of the Friends (except Matt LeBlanc) remember remarkably little of the show. You better look at the blobers that you can easily find on YouTube. They are (almost) as funny as the series itself!
