I agree with Baggerman's review, there is a lot of laughter, but all this in an excellent historical context that still fairly accurately reflects what it was like (if I go by books). Baldrick is a fantastic character and Atkinson also proves that he can do more than just make funny faces. Delicious puns too, which are interspersed with visual humor.

The Black Adder in a British comedy series that marked the breakthrough of British comedian Rowan Atkinson. BlackAdder, along with his other character, Mr. Bean, probably one of the most famous comedy characters in British TV history. The series was created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson and had no fewer than four seasons, each set in a different time period. This first season is set in the late Middle Ages.

Quite an ambitious start with a large cast and many outdoor scenes shot on location. With a budget of £1 million, The Black Adder was one of the most expensive comedy series ever at the time. Despite this high budget, this first season remains just a fun start, but the following seasons were a lot more fun in terms of humor. The witty dialogues in particular are sorely missed here and in contrast to BlackAdder's descendants, Edmund BlackAdder in this season is mainly a stupid, but extremely devious good-for-nothing.

Thanks to the success, the BBC was ready for a second season, provided the costs were significantly reduced. It therefore took 3 years before the second season appeared, during which all recordings shot on location were replaced by exclusively studio recordings.

In this first season, Blackadder is not yet at his very best as a character, being less cunning and manipulative than his later incarnations. Still, there's a great sense of humor in it.

It is an alternate version of English history, in which Richard III wins the Battle of Bosworth and is succeeded by his fictional cousin Richard IV. Shakespeare is parodied, for example with the Weird Sisters from The Scottish Play. The greed of the Church is made fun of. Some jokes hadn't passed censorship in the US. The best part is for Brian Blessed with his thunder voice and his wild beard. Favorite episodes: 1 and 3.
