The Shannara Chronicles plot

Set thousands of years in the future, the series follows three heroes. Wil is half-elf and half-human and one of the last of the legendary Shannara family. Amberle is an elf princess and the first woman to be welcomed into the Chosen, an elite group of elves responsible for protecting and caring for the ancient Ellcrys tree. And then there's Eretria, who is entirely human and was raised by a group of thieves known as the Robbers. They set out to prevent an evil army of demons from destroying the world.

Begon vrij aardig en ik had best wel het vertrouwen dat dit nog beter zou worden. Leek er zelfs op dat er nog wat karakterontwikkeling in zou komen. Nou, dat vertrouwen bleek misplaatst. Na 2 afleveringen werd zo'n beetje alle karakterontwikkeling weg gegooid, eendimensionaal vlak schreeuwgedrag daarvoor in de plaats en het plot bleek ontzettend rommelig te zijn. Was makkelijk een meer gebalanceerde serie van te maken geweest. Als ik zo recensies van de boekenreeks doorlees tenminste. Echt verbazingwekkend dat de makers een soort van episch dilemma vormen waardoor onze groep superieure 'chosen' adolescenten een journey moet ondergaan (tezamen met ongeschikte ridders zonder enige screentime) en vervolgens allerlei stomme avonturen beleven die werkelijk niets met dat demonenprobleempje / 'oh nee, de boom, einde van de wereld' te doen hadden. WTF!? Ken het boekmateriaal niet, maar dat de makers daar niets goeds mee gedaan hebben, blijkt wel. En dan eindigen ze ook nog eens met een non-canon einde. Dat, terwijl je de kans hebt om een toffe anthologie over de wereld van Shannara te maken met diverse verhalen per boek. Nu heb je juist kronieken over één van de kronieken. Werkelijk, MTV? Resteren nog de personages die ook niet echt met het script uit de voeten kunnen. Wat plat zeg. Vooral die drie 'chosen' tieners waren erg matig. Zelfs Manu Bennett valt tegen. Om nog maar te zwijgen over dat subplotje met die koning en zijn zoons... Nee, eerste twee afleveringen waren erg misleidend. Om te bedenken dat Millar en Gough nou juist mijn favoriet van 2015 (Into the Badlands) hebben afgeleverd. Teleurstellend.

Started off pretty well and I was pretty confident that this would get even better. Even looked like there would be some character development in it. Well, that confidence turned out to be misplaced. After 2 episodes pretty much all character development was thrown away, one dimensional flat screaming behavior in its place and the plot turned out to be very messy. Could easily have been made into a more balanced series. At least when I read reviews of the book series.

Really amazing that the creators pose some kind of epic dilemma that requires our group of superior 'chosen' adolescents to journey (along with unfit knights without any screentime) and then go on all kinds of stupid adventures that really have nothing to do with that demon problem / 'oh no, the boom, end of the world' had to do. WTF!?

Don't know the book material, but it turns out that the makers have done nothing good with it. And then they also end with a non-canon ending. That, while you have the chance to make a cool anthology about the world of Shannara with several stories per book. Now you just have chronicles about one of the chronicles. Really, MTV?

There are still the characters who don't really get along with the script. How flat. Especially those three 'chosen' teenagers were very mediocre. Even Manu Bennett is disappointing. Not to mention that subplot with that king and his sons...

No, the first two episodes were very misleading. To think that Millar and Gough just delivered my 2015 favorite (Into the Badlands). Disappointing.
