Firefly plot

Five hundred years in the future, civilization has reached a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity wants to do their part. They take on any job, legal or not, to have fuel in the tank and food on the table. But things get a little more complicated when they bring in a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. For example, they must flee and do everything they can to escape the Alliance ships and the carnivorous Reavers, who live on the edge of the galaxy.

Doodzonde dat deze serie ooit gecanceld is. Waarschijnlijk om het feit dat deze serie te ver vooruit liep op zijn tijd of het feit dat FOX de chronologische volgorde van de serie heeft verpest. Wat was die combinatie tussen science-fiction en western toch heerlijk. De personages, onder leiding van Nathan Fillion, waren na 13 afleveringen al meer dan prima uitgewerkt. De humor voelde nooit geforceerd en dat intronummertje, wat Madeliefje hierboven al aangeeft, bracht je gelijk in de aflevering.

It's a shame this series was ever cancelled. Probably due to the fact that this series was too far ahead of its time or the fact that FOX screwed up the chronological order of the series. What a wonderful combination of science fiction and western. The characters, led by Nathan Fillion, were more than well developed after 13 episodes. The humor never felt forced and that intro number, which Madeliefje already mentioned above, brought you right into the episode.

Leuke serie, destijds langs me heen gegaan, maar alsnog zeer de moeite waard. Visueel reeds behoorlijk verouderd, maar de sympathieke, goed uitgewerkte personages en de onderkoelde humor zijn nog steeds top. De mengeling van science fiction en western werkt verrassend goed. Jammer dat men het seizoen niet volgens de originele planning mocht afmaken, aangezien de boel nu behoorlijk abrupt eindigt. De film Serenity vormt een soort afsluiting, maar die is visueel en inhoudelijk toch wel behoorlijk afwijkend. De serie is leuker in ieder geval.

Nice series, passed me by at the time, but still very much worth watching. Visually already quite outdated, but the sympathetic, well-developed characters and the cool humor are still top notch. The mixture of science fiction and western works surprisingly well. It's a shame they couldn't finish the season according to the original schedule, as things now end quite abruptly. The film Serenity forms a kind of conclusion, but it is visually and substantively quite different. Anyway, the series is better.

Voor de tweede keer aan het genieten, wat een goeie serie! Joss Whedon zat hier op het top van zijn kunnen en de ene na de andere leuk geschreven dialoog vliegt uit zijn pen, elke keer verpakt in een prima standalone aflevering waarin de bemanning in de nodige penarie terecht komt. En die cast is ontzettend sterk, goed ingespeeld en enthousiast. Opvallend veel acteurs van Firefly hebben het gemaakt en zie je terug in andere series. Baccarin in V en Homeland, Baldwin in Chuck, Torres in Hannibal, om er maar een paar te noemen. Nathan Fillion vind ik ook erg fijn, geen Han Solo ripoff maar een geheel eigen antiheld met zijn hart op de goede plaats. Die had van mij wel Nathan Drake mogen spelen in Uncharted, geknipt gewoon. De space western opzet maakt dat het budget toch redelijk binnen de perken moet zijn gebleven aangezien veel episodes zich gewoon in de volgende nederzetting afspelen (en uiteraard lijkt elke planeet exact op het zuiden van Amerika...ach wat geeft het). Kan ook niet wachten om Serenity, die toch een onverwacht en zeer gewaardeerd afsluitend kadootje was voor de "browncoats" (de Firefly fanbase), weer eens te bekijken maar eerst de serie afkijken!

Enjoying it for the second time, what a great series! Joss Whedon was on top of his game here and one well-written dialogue after another flew out of his pen, each time wrapped in a fine standalone episode in which the crew ends up in quite a bit of trouble.

And the cast is incredibly strong, well acted and enthusiastic. A striking number of Firefly actors have made it and you can see it in other series. Baccarin in V and Homeland, Baldwin in Chuck, Torres in Hannibal, just to name a few. I also really like Nathan Fillion, not a Han Solo ripoff but an antihero all his own with his heart in the right place. I should have let him play Nathan Drake in Uncharted, just cut.

The space western setup means that the budget must have been kept within reasonable limits since many episodes just take place in the next settlement (and of course every planet looks exactly like the south of America...what the heck).

Also can't wait to see Serenity, which was an unexpected and much appreciated closing gift for the "browncoats" (the Firefly fanbase), but first watch the series!
