There are currently no plans for a second series of Obi-Wan Kenobi, according to star Ewan McGregor.

At the end of the 1990s, the Scottish actor was cast as a younger version of Obi-Wan in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He would reprise the role in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as part of the prequel trilogy, which did not prove as popular with fans as the original trilogy.

Following the conclusion of the prequel trilogy, McGregor moved on to other projects and it seemed like he had put Star Wars firmly behind him. That was until an invitation to a Star Wars marathon at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood in 2017 when he was asked to introduce one of the prequel movies.

There, he caught the Star Wars bug again, and it wasn't long after that discussions began about a return as Obi-Wan, which eventually materialised into the aforementioned streaming series.

Hayden Christensen also returned in the series as Darth Vader and both actors and the show as a whole received positive reviews from fans and critics alike, but that doesn't mean a second series is guaranteed.

“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney," he told Variety when asked about a potential second season.

McGregor reluctant to do Star Wars

In the same interview, McGregor reflected on the savage reviews from Star Wars fans that the prequel trilogy received, and revealed he was initially reluctant to join the project as he was eager to work with Danny Boyle on The Beach.

“It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was," he explained.

"I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. ‘The Beach’ was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice.

“I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”

In recent years, the reaction to the prequel trilogy has been softer from fans which ultimately led to McGregor's return as Obi-Wan and Christensen's return as Darth Vader in the series.
