Curb Your Enthusiasm will end with season 12 in 2024.
The HBO show stars Larry David as a fictionalised version of himself living in Los Angeles after the success of hit show, Seinfield, which he co-created. It is one of the most critically-acclaimed sitcoms of all time and has been nominated for 47 Primetime Emmy Awards including 10 out of 11 possible nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series.
HBO announced this week that the twelfth season will be the last, and David released a statement of his own in typical tongue-in-cheek fashion.
“As CURB comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character,” he said.
“And so ‘Larry David,’ I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those of you who would like to get in touch with me, you can reach me at Doctors Without Borders.”
“It’s hard to say farewell to such a ground-breaking, brilliantly funny and iconic series like CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, which has left its mark across television and the comedy genre,” HBO and Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys said. “Working alongside Larry David and Jeff Schaffer as well as all of the comedic masterminds that comprise our producers, cast and crew has been a joy that I will always treasure.”
Larry David nearly died in season 11
The narrative of season 11 is kicked off with a botched burglary at Larry's house as the perpetrator falls to his death in the swimming pool, which is supposed to be fenced off.
Executive producer Jeff Schaffer says the plan was always to end the series with Larry falling into the pool in a similar manner and that a death scene had actually been filmed, though no death would actually have been confirmed as Curb Your Enthusiasm is usually renewed after production on a series has finished.
"I am very proud of this season," Schaffer previously told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Sometimes we don’t know where we are going, but this season when we started with Larry finding the dead guy in the pool, right away I knew that we were going to end it with Larry falling into a pool because there was no fence.
"Sometimes it’s obvious. With the season before, we knew that spite store was going to meet its demise, somehow. But this one, it just felt right. I know I say this all the time, but every season is the last season. And I wanted to prepare as if it was the last one. So Larry kept falling into that pool without the fence and banging his head .
"We actually have a shot after he’d fallen in, of the still pool with just the envelope floating in the middle, and maybe adding one bubble."
