There are four major cinema releases in the UK this week, and we have all the details for you.

2024 was a massive year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many cinema-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.

Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.44 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer made $953m. No pressure for the movies that follow, in 2024, then...

New Movie Releases this week

Argylle - 2 February, 2024

The UK's king of the spy caper, Matthew Vaughn, is back with a fresh take on the genre with Argylle, which is intended to kick off a new trilogy.

Official premise:

'Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aidan, an undercover spy, shows up to save her from being kidnapped or killed, Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing and no one are what they seem.'

Argylle cast: Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

American Fiction - 2 February, 2024

American Fiction is a comedy drama written and directed by Cord Jefferson based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett.  It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Official premise:

'Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.'

American Fiction cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown.

The Zone of Interest - 2 February, 2024

The Zone of Interest is a historical drama written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. It premiered in Cannes in May and won the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize and has also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Official premise:

'The commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.'

The Zone of Interest cast: Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller.

Migration - 2 February, 2024

The choice for the kids is Migration, a new animated comedy from Dreamworks.

Official premise:

'A family of ducks decides to leave the safety of a New England pond for an adventurous trip to Jamaica. However, their well-laid plans quickly go awry when they get lost and wind up in New York City. The experience soon inspires them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends, and accomplish more than they ever thought possible.'

Migration cast: Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, David Mitchell, Carol Kane, Caspar Jennings, Tresi Gazal, and Danny DeVito.
