Went to this western movie with a certain expectation, because of the positive comments below. Unfortunately, it was disappointing compared to what I expected. The acting was good, although you can expect that with this cast. I found the story, and especially the ending, to be quite cliche and that's why I didn't think the story was great. Especially the middle part I really had to pull myself together to keep my concentration on the film. For me that is clearly a minus point and that is why this film scores average.

All in all, a satisfactory one because of the acting performances.

“Any man don't wanna get killed better clear on out the back.”

Strong and old-fashioned Western film by Clint Eastwood. Hard and uncompromising, Unforgiven is also a story about an old man who leaves behind his violent and murderous past. Bill Munny is clearly a lost soul, but he eventually bites into a violent case in which a woman has been severely mistreated. The interplay between Eastwood and Freeman is especially excellent, and Hackman as a violent sheriff is a joy to watch. The tension can be cut at times, and Eastwood deserves all the credit for the atmosphere he creates as a director. This is a western the way I like it.

Eastwood.

A director who has made a lot of films and who always manages to get reasonable reactions from his audience. Not every director makes films that catch on all the time, but Eastwood has found his place. In the meantime he collapses a bit, but around this time I think he got the hang of it.

Unforgiven is a combination between a very traditional western film and a film that reasonably wants to do its own thing. Eastwood concentrates on building up several times and he manages to do that quite well. Many scenes immediately become more attractive. Some of the confrontations reminded me a lot of a Tarantino movie for example.

The acting is of course provided by Eastwood himself and some extra roles that put down nice appearances but are also not special. It seems very easy to grab starpower, because the atmosphere that Eastwood gives to his characters ensures that they don't stay with you very much. A little more special than the average appearances, but it's not quite there yet.

The look is doable but on the other hand Eastwood seems to have grabbed his bingo card of attributes that belong in a western. Everything you expect from a western is there, and there is nothing wrong with that. I was hoping for something you don't normally see, because Eastwood tries to do that with the build-up and character development. I also found the opening relatively refreshing in that respect.

Film fully revives in the second half, I found the first half a bit tougher to get through. Furthermore, the film also repeatedly takes paths that should not have been necessary, such as romantic developments, because the core of the film is very simple and the film can take advantage of the mutual chemistry between the villains. Nice Eastwood, not his best but not his worst either.
