So, let's get this one out of the dust. What a wonderful western, this free remake of 'Shichinin no Samurai'. I let go of that fact and just sat back and enjoyed this atmospheric, entertaining and beautifully shot western. Brynner, Bronson, McQueen and co. know how to portray their characters very coolly. Technically not great, but in terms of execution it is. No Leone, but high-level entertainment. DeLuxe Color, Panavision.. this looked beautiful again.

Film with a fairly long running time strikes me now. Fortunately, something always happens, even in the first hour. Although I sometimes thought 'get on with it' looking forward to the final. The combination of script, actors and the great soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein is quite irresistible. And what strikes me. Although the body count means nothing less than a massacre, this still comes across to me as a jolly feel good movie with a touch of romance and a light-hearted moment here and there. They certainly had a hand in that old Hollywood. If I were to pick 1 favorite among the actors, it would be bad guy Eli Wallach for me. With great charisma, he plays out the threat he is supposed to represent, as head of the bandit gang. He's a rewarding counterpoint to the good guys.
