Man of the West plot

"IN THE ROLE THAT FITS HIM LIKE A GUN FITS A HOLSTER! GARY COOPER as the MAN OF THE WEST"

While en route by train to recruit a teacher, former outlaw Link Jones is involved in a train robbery by the old Dock Tobin's gang. After the robbery, Link, the voluptuous saloon entertainer Billie Ellis and the hapless gambler Sam Beasley are left in an inhospitable area. The trio find an abandoned ranch along the way, but this ranch turns out to be the hideout of Tobin and his gang. Tobin wants to bring Link back into his gang, but the other gang members don't trust him. Link agrees to rob a bank with Tobin and his gang in the hopes of at least saving Billie and Sam's lives. Along the way, however, conflicts between Link and the gang members are bound to happen.

This is a good western, although I thought it was the least Mann I've seen so far.

There are always entertaining and good action scenes in his films, and the characters are often well developed. This is no different in this Man of the West, and the foundation has already been laid. The story is also quite interesting. A man who struggles with his past and is regularly confronted with this, despite the fact that he now leads a completely different life.

The film contains a few fairly exciting scenes, and the acting is excellent from most of the cast. Lee J. Cobb in particular is very convincing, with that characteristic face of his. The biggest problem for me, however, was with lead actor Gary Cooper. The fact that he is far too old for the role he plays may not be a problem, but I just thought his acting was weak at times. He looks extremely tired the entire time, which does not suit the role he plays, and all his sentences do not always come out convincing. It could well be that the disease that would take him down a few years later was perhaps already among his members? No, I would have liked to see another actor in his place.

Regardless of the leading role, Mann is entrusted with making a good western. Once again it is entertaining, and there are not really many points of criticism.

3.5*

Another top film from Anthony Mann. From the first to the last second I was captivated by the spectacle. The storyline with a strong emphasis on psychology and intense interaction between the protagonists appears modern. I can't believe this movie is over 70 years old. Gary Cooper finds himself in ambiguous territory, a man with a past but also a man who has charted his own path. Lee J. Cobb stars as a returning gang leader, with his raspy voice and slightly crazy appearance. But the rest of the bunch is also welcome. One of the better and most intense scenes - among many others - is undoubtedly the fight between Cooper and Jack Lord, where the latter is stripped naked. And last but not least, Julie London certainly deserves a mention. In her day, in my opinion, she was one of the most seductive voices in jazz and I was curious to see what she would do as an actress. And she didn't disappoint me. She came across as believable (in what was apparently her own favorite movie). It's a shame she didn't sing, although there's usually plenty of room for that in the western genre. I thought her speaking voice sounded just as huskyly sexy as her singing voice.

Beautifully shot by Mann and his team, as you would expect from him. And supported by a beautiful score by Leigh Harline. A score that appears modern and moody. You really can't ask for more from a film than the quality you find here.

A somewhat standard western without much adventure. Which maybe wasn't the intention. We get Gary Cooper in a role that suits him perfectly and director Anthony Mann is used to making westerns. Yet it never really becomes special. But thanks to Mann, Cooper and the beautiful appearance of Julie London, it's not too bad. A light-hearted character film in the Wild West.

Yet it is striking when you read on Wikipedia that Godard highly praised this film and film critics Philip French considered this a masterpiece by Mann with high appreciation for Cooper.
