Mediocre.

Personally, I like such adventure films from the 1960s. They often look big, have an eye for detail and often the cast is led by faces who already had great careers or would have one later on. In this case, it is Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood who lead the film.

I'm not that mad about Burton, I think Eastwood is a fine actor, especially in his younger years. For the last 30 years he's often played a grumpy old guy, but his younger self has a somewhat casual vibe that I can have. Its freshness is something this film could really use, because although the start is promising, things go bad pretty quickly. Too much time is spent explaining. A bit of a shame about the setting, which has a rather James Bond-like feel to it.

In the end it is too long a film, with some nice elements here and there, but also things that have not withstood the test of time - the too long-winded character and the bumbling death scenes are the best examples of this.

2.5

More of an adventure film than a real war film in the end, but what an express train. A commando has to rescue an American general from an Austrian castle. The film has a good flowing flow from the very first minutes: from the drop in the mountains to the walk back, disguising oneself as Germans, crossing the bridge, entering the kneipe, etc. It's as if you experience everything minute by minute. It's already been said here: you're watching a James Bond movie, but a Bond movie with only action and little bullshit. The twists do the rest.

It may all be a bit far-fetched, and the superheroes Smith and Schaeffer barely get off with a scratch, but the stunts and explosions, spectacular scenes like on the cable car, and the tension make this film a real party. A small downside is the ease with which the Germans are outdone; so you put some guards on the cable car if you know that this is the only way to get out of the castle . Not disappointed for a second, and with a somewhat more modest role by Clint Eastwood.
