The Outpost plot

"The mission was survival."

The film tells the story of 53 American soldiers who fought a force of approximately 400 enemy insurgents in northeast Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Originally built to involve locals in community development projects, Combat Outpost Keating - located at the foot of three craggy mountains just 14 miles from the Pakistani border - faced a constant threat of attack by the Taliban, forcing the U.S. soldiers stationed there were in danger. When it was finally decided to close the base, the Taliban discovered this and decided to make a statement.

Not good.

Yet another action thriller about a gang of heroic machos who (have to) stand their ground against terrorists, this time in an unluckily located outpost. Macho's on duty include Scott Eastwood and that's saying a lot: that's guaranteed rude acting.

The film progresses in circles towards the inevitable (final) confrontation with the Taliban, but I can't say I could name more than three soldiers at that point. The finale is okay, but can't compete with comparable films like 12 Strong or Lone Survivor.

Fairly recent title from which I had already somewhat understood that it was not a high flyer. Bought the film anyway in a promotion of 3 for the price of 2 and just grabbed the opportunity to watch it yesterday.

And it must be said that the film certainly does not have its opening phase. After the arrival of some soldiers at Camp Keating arrives. A very fragmentary picture of tough men's behavior emerges, in addition there are several incidents with the CO's that of course belong to the story but actually add little. It must have been a combination of the quality and the fact that I couldn't concentrate well on it, but that first phase is downright cliché, chaotic, fragmentary, and makes very little impression.

Fortunately, the arrival of Captain Yllescas heralds a better phase in which we build towards the inevitable, namely the attack on Outpost Keating. Strong and alarming in that sense is also the Hadji who is caught filming in the compound. And that final phase, from the moment that the base is under fire, the quality of the film increases considerably and it can be argued that this is not what The Outpost is all about, and that is violence, action, flying bullets and explosions.

The cast is fairly unknown to me outside of Eastwood and Bloom, but adequate. And as I said, the film definitely doesn't have to have the characters from the beginning, in fact, the film even falls short in that area. Fortunately, halfway through the film, the film picks up quite a bit, mainly due to the slightly slower pace and the solid action that is well portrayed in terms of special effects, camera work and editing. The Outpost is certainly not a top film, but a sufficient one is more than appropriate.
