The Bridge at Remagen plot

"Thus ended the last great German stand in the West."

Germany, 1945. The troops of the Third Reich withdraw. To escape the attacks of the Allies, it is crucial that they reach the other side of the Rhine as quickly as possible. Bridge after bridge is destroyed. In the end, only the bridge of Remagen remains. To the dismay of the German officers on site, Hitler orders this bridge to be blown up as well. This would mean that many thousands of German soldiers are immediately sentenced to certain death, because they are then closed off on the Allied bank.

Not a well-known war film, but despite that it is quite a fascinating and interesting war film. The story is well put together and the images often look beautiful. The cast also did a good job. Just a nice typical 60s war film.

A bit forgotten now, but The Bridge At Remagen is still one of the best war films of the 1960s. The cast of the German camp is almost exactly that of The Longest Day, so there are quite a few familiar faces. In short, the film offers little more than the capture of the bridge. Rather, the surprise of the film lies in its execution with very well shot fights. The first in particular, in which Americans and Germans shoot at each other over the Rhine, is a nice opener.

The film feels like a good documentary. Both sides of the story are well explained. The German side is the most interesting, because they face the most difficult decisions. They have no explosives, no tanks, too few men or simply too young. You can read in a lot of things that the war is coming to an end at this stage. In that regard, it is quite a sad sight to see children in battle. Everything else is convincingly shown: artillery shelling, air raids and street fights. The plot build is very strong in The Bridge at Remagen.

A very decent war film - for the time. An exponent of the period.

There are some doubts about its historical value. Yes it is about a bridge, and with its turrets - not the arch - it also resembles the original one that the story is about. But it kind of ends there too. The story is decorated in the style of the 'war books' that circulated in high school in the 1970s - a sort of bouquet series for boys, so to speak. As a result, it all remains very one-dimensional.

This detracts from the historical significance of the capture of the bridge. Not that the war has become much shorter because of this, but in the race between Patton and Montgomery against the Russians it did make a difference - just as in how much effort, and therefore also how many casualties were otherwise involved in the crossing been.

Nice roles by Hans Christian Blech, and especially Robert Vaughn. But I can't really see much more than that. A little more historical detail and a little less war book could have made it a much better film. Maybe this movie could get a nice remake - and then with the attention of, say, a Saving Private Ryan. That would make for a nice movie.
