I don't usually like movies about soldiers, but this one with its layered story seemed on its way to an above-average rating by me, until the screwed-up and extremely improbable climax came to ruin everything. A typical example of pity.

Such a shame about that useless and improbable fight and violence at the end of the film because as a satire on the American army of occupation it was quite successful. Ignorance and flattery, lack of discipline and trade in goods stolen from the army....

In any case, Joaquin Phoenix puts on a good act.

Satire is usually not my thing. I prefer over-the-top humor. Not that satire has to be funny, this movie usually isn't either. The story is also fairly ordinary, although the US military does not come out too well. It's definitely not advertising haha. The film also tries to add a twist at the end his roommate is actually an undercover lieutenant and it ends on his Michael Bay's with a huge bang. Harris plays a bit sad part, but still the best in the movie. Scott Glenn has a character head. The romance between Phoenix and Paquin is necessary to the story, but their chemistry is too faked to be believable.
