Pretty sentimental in direction, plot and music. And that's why now and then cringingly close to classics like Het Bombardement.

Two plus points: the protagonist and the lighting of both fronts. But that's not enough to save the film.

Definitely worth a reference film about the First World War. After all, they aren't that thick. Fairly accurate approximation of the events at the Battle of Messines in 1917. The site around Hill 60 in Zillebeke had been contested since 1915 and changed hands regularly during the many months that the battle was fought there. Very nice to visit today with also nearby crater pit of the Caterpillar.

A film that regularly harks back to flashbacks of Woody's quiet life. It sometimes takes you out of the atmosphere of the film, but it doesn't really bother you because the serenity is guarded at all times. Quality and authenticity are central here in the film. The timidity and fears come out well. The Germans speak German and are not demonized.

A cosmetic flaw here and there. For example, the trenches seemed to me to be a bit too straight instead of the zigzag movements to counter bomb attacks, among other things. Otherwise great movie. Good looking!

An Australian unit serving at the front in France in 1916 is ordered to dig a deep tunnel under the German fortifications on Hill 60. Interesting angle for a WWII drama, but it's the scenes on the battlefield that, thanks to the camera work of Toby Oliver and exquisite sound effects make an indelible impression. Unfortunately, Cowell is pretty drab in the lead role and the supporting roles aren't developed enough to get you emotionally involved in the most dramatic scenes.
