Russell Crowe plays a wonderful villain with a lot of pent-up anger, but that's about it. The plot was (unlike Crowe) paper thin and sparsely worked out. The film is mainly based on the shock value and a raw edge, but there was much more to the story than a simple serial killer chase.

Because where a film like Duel shines in its simplicity, simplicity is the weak point in Unhinged. It's a B-movie that does its best to score high (the production value is high), but never reaches that level. Well, I thought the intro was powerful, the rest was mediocre.

I did enjoy it on a superficial level, but it's all fairly predictable and not very original. The weak ending didn't help either.

3*

An unnamed man [Russell Crowe] takes revenge on his ex by forcibly entering her home, beating her and her new partner, and setting the house on fire. Rachel [Caren Pistorius] has just lost an important client to a combination of oversleeping and traffic congestion. She expresses her frustration by honking loudly when the driver of the car in front of her stops at the green light. But oops, it turns out to be Crowe. He apologizes, but also demands an apology for Rachel's over-behaved. Rachel doesn't feel like it and that is the starting signal for endless chases, murders, beatings and crazy twists in this crazy thriller without any character deepening.

Russell Crowe here plays a fantastic psycho with a “nothing to lose” attitude…only the chaotic, depressed, grumpy single mom almost makes you hope Russell wins…

The film doesn't really succeed in arousing sympathy for the woman and maybe that's not quite the intention, but when you consider that this film should have been in the cinema (and did so for a while) it just doesn't matter. enough to be a great movie

*3.0
