dr. Will Caster (Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of artificial intelligence. He is working on a conscious machine that combines the collective information of everything known so far with the full spectrum of human feelings. His controversial experiments make him a prime target for anti-technology extremists. When they try to kill Will, they inadvertently ensure that he succeeds in his intent - to participate in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Hall) and best friend Max (Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not whether it is possible…but whether it is allowed. Their worst fears become reality when Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly limitless desire for power. And it soon becomes clear that he may be unstoppable...

What a weird movie. In any case, it all went way too fast for me, I could hardly follow the first half hour and I understood the balls of it. To top it off, the only reason I watched died, bye Johnny, bye beautiful man , and then I stopped following it at all. With a feeling of "Am I so retarded" I stayed behind, when Mr. virtually appeared to live on. Suddenly it didn't interest me anymore, I didn't want to know how and what anymore, and started to find it a bit irritating myself. Do I have to watch it for more than an hour? To unbelievable actors who don't seem to feel like it themselves? Yes.
Hope it got better unfortunately didn't help. I wonder if fans of this genre can appreciate it, I certainly don't. Even Johnny couldn't save the movie.

Not very successful at the box office, presumably because of the salaries of the huge swath of famous actors (who probably didn't do it for free, even though they knew the director well through his work for Christopher Nolan), and also here at MovieMeter poorly rated (slightly better on IMDb: 6.3/10), but I was still enthralled by it, albeit perhaps with intellectual rather than emotional interest. Intriguing starting point, happy even far into the future, until it suddenly arrives tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
