“Don't look for a happy ending. It's not an American story. It's an Irish one.”

Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford together in a movie. Pitt as an IRA terrorist who comes to New York on "business" and Ford as a police officer who eventually discovers Pitt's true identity and wants to arrest him. That should provide an intense movie experience, right?

The Devil's Own has its tense moments, and with Pitt and Ford forming a friendly bond first, their eventual cat-and-mouse game is compelling. But director Pakula does let the reins loose at times and there is no question of a tension. Ford and Pitt are doing well, but too much screen time is allocated for unnecessary subplots. The Devil's Own is certainly not a bad film, but a little more tension and a tighter script would have done the film well.

Barely 2 years later, Pitt would star in Fight Club, a film that looks infinitely more modern than the Devil's Own. Sure, partly Fincher's credit, but certainly also the weakness of Devil's Own: it all looks very early '90s, maybe even late '80s.

The film raises a potentially interesting moral issue: do you follow the law or do you let your feelings and personal history/affection towards that person be the deciding factor. Harrison Ford looks for a middle ground, but that is of course doomed to fail if you want to keep a terrorist from his target. So it ends up being the Hollywood middle ground. And with that, Devil's Own misses its chance to say anything meaningful. 3*

weak.

The beginning can go on - I like to hear The Cranberries too - but the whole thing about the manhunt for the IRA terrorists is soon moved to America, where you meet one of those boring Harrison Ford who sees it as something too old cop eventually has to face Brad Pitt's terrible Irish accent... That's not it. It is no longer interesting after 10 minutes and never wants to be. The final is also a disappointment.
