Mediocre film in which a woman runs away after she has stolen a large sum of money. A special kind of remake as it is almost an identical film. Obviously it is in color and the film has a different cast and crew. Certainly interesting to watch, but it sometimes detracted from the original (especially the acting came across too artificial) and therefore just under 3.0 stars.

This is somewhat comparable and I thought it was more successful (though by the same director).

The remake.

In the end it's a shame, because there isn't much creativity except for the opening scene. It is a remake that is exactly the same as the original. Same movements, same dialogues and even the exact same playing time as the original from 1960.

In addition, Van Sant chokes on the casting. Heche is a weak Crane, very annoying and a bit too over the top. Moore is also a bit lost in this film and Mortensen knows little of his role. The power mainly comes in the form of Vaughn, who starts to make his character fun for me. He has to lose to Perkins, but since Brawl in Cell Block 99, Vaughn has always been a nice appearance for me.

For the rest, there is also a nice supporting role for Macy, who knows how to make nice things from his limited character. The soundtrack, though not too original, remains great and essential in creating the atmosphere in this film.

Camera work is sometimes excellent, but the film itself never manages to be very exciting despite all the aids it is given. It doesn't really matter to me that it's in color. It's mainly that a large part of the cast does not act very well.

Some scenes are also unfortunately much more clumsy than the original. Mother's discovery for example. Clearly a doll, while I still wanted to believe it in the first part. It's a shame that Van Sant abandons the film, by putting nothing of his own creativity into it and thus achieving a result that few people turn their noses up at.

Well, you can kind of expect that. As long as you don't mess with the original too much, you can change things, but then you should.
