“I used to want to be admired.”

Intense film by De Palma. The battle between two women spirals out of control, and the ending feels inevitable from the start. The story is a bit far-fetched at times and some plot developments (the big twist, the dream sequence) can be seen coming from miles away. The erotic touch doesn't come out very well either, and in that respect there could have been a little more passion in the film.

Passion therefore has to rely more on the acting, De Palma's directing choices and the strong music. Especially between McAdams and Rapace it crackles, and both are given the space to bring out the worst in themselves. De Palma's directing style also creates a strange and dreamy atmosphere (the split screen scene is a picture) and the music tops it off.

Intriguing film with a nice tune. A touch of killer queens, femme fatale and the perfect murder. This is what you get in Passion. Unfortunately a little less erotic thriller than I had suspected from the title. The split screen that De Palma often uses is also back, this time it moves a bit to the left and right. The ending is too crazy for words. I saw the movie without subtitles so maybe I misunderstood but was Noomi Rapace killed by Rachel McAdams' twin sister in the end? Was he dead or never existed? Well, maybe that detective can prevent it. So open ending and very suggestive. I like it.

Bad.

Brian De Palma pulls some tricks out of his hat and provides a tight cinematography. The cold look does the film good. Nevertheless, they do not succeed in keeping the soap content low and turning it into something really dignified.

Passion is mainly a wafer-thin screenplay that is very doubtfully transformed into a film. The situations are embarrassingly bad, whether it's the 'manipulative' bullying or the slightly erotic scenes. Leading ladies Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams - who can normally act anyway - don't do much, but their only fault may be that they lent themselves to this film. I don't think anyone could have done anything about it.
