After the newly elected president of a fictitious state is assassinated, one of the members of the commission of inquiry refuses to sign the final report. He demands that the investigation be re-run. During the investigation, he has serious doubts about the 'lone gunman' theory that the committee wanted to push through.

Without a doubt one of Verneuil's very best films, especially in this genre.
A film that, like so many others, involves an investigation into a murder or attack, but which absolutely excels in this because of the precise explanation of the many aspects that can be associated with it. There is not only the rather technical approach (the bullet casings, the photos, the interrogations...) but also the psychological approach of the phenomenon of the "perpetrator" that is very neatly, interestingly and captivatingly worked out and although there are quite a few characters, the plot remains clear and obvious.
Yves Montand, a late French top actor (since 1991) who was often found in films featuring corruption, politics, state and other power interests and repression, is excellent in his role, but that was assured in advance.

Very good film by Henri Verneuil! And as Quentin already told me, perhaps the very best film by Verneuil! Although I also thought Le Clan Des Siciliens was very good! But that one is more for entertainment and leaves no further message, this film really leaves a political message and is clearly inspired by the assassination of Kennedy. Peur Sur La Ville is far below the level of this film and Le Clan Des Siciliens.
The film is also very beautifully shot, beautiful colors and very nicely restored.
It was also my first encounter with the actor Yves Montand who I really liked! Good charisma, I hope to see more films from him in the future.
