Lukewarm film adaptation of the second book of the same name (the first was The Dry) by Jane Harper, with Eric Bana again in the rather lackluster leading role. Unfortunately, the plot and characters are a lot less interesting this time, resulting in a rather ponderous film that drags on to an unremarkable denouement. It certainly doesn't want to be exciting. Visually neatly done and the completely different setting, after the desert of The Dry, is nice, but in terms of content this does not make us long for a possible film adaptation of book three, Exiles.

Good film in which a company outing in the woods goes wrong. This mystery is entertaining and well constructed because of the flashbacks. Although the nature here is certainly beautiful, it is slightly less atmospheric compared to the first part. The same goes for the tension. A narrow 3.5 stars.

A disappointing second part after the good 'The Dry'. You can watch this movie without having watched the first part, but it is not smart. The first part is a much better movie than this one .

The acting performances are good in themselves, that's not the problem. The location is also beautiful (although that was a bit depressing because of the bad weather). It's mainly in the script and perhaps the way of filming (too often changing perspective). As already noted: it just doesn't want to get exciting. It's quite entertaining, but you're there and watching it.

It's also a bit too illogical / unbelievable here and there. Some examples: you're not going to trust someone who can't read a map when you're in the wilderness with a group on your way to the next camp, if you lose a family member as a family, you don't go on the road. You stay around the place where you last saw each other, it's almost impossible that they found the mother (played in a haystack story), everyone trips a bit too often and you certainly don't trip over a dog skeleton that's still buried in the ground, you don't just stand at the edge of a cliff waiting for someone where you fall off if you slip a little and so on.

It all just kind of meanders along. In that respect, this film can't stand in the shadow of the much stronger first part. Maybe I sound a bit too negative. It really is an entertaining film. It just could have been a lot better than it was. 2.5 stars.
