Horrifying and astonishing. So far this is my favorite Cronenberg. Everything is there, because the idea of a plug (and all its consequences) can also be placed under body horror as far as I'm concerned. Visually, the master has his affairs in order. The cast consists of a bevy of good actors and the story is good. At least, as long as you get the story in the first time. In any case, it also shows how horribly overrated the alleged originality of Inception is. Cronenberg has his affairs in order here and also has a very strong message. Cronenberg opposes a digital culture that was still in its infancy in 1999. I'll have to review it soon, because I'm convinced that the story will become a lot clearer.

What a fantastic progressive film eXistenZ is. Even now, let alone 23 years ago. This will only become more and more relevant in the future. Possibly the best 'game' movie ever made. Thematically, this is Cronenberg at his most visionary. I was constantly impressed by how well, yet subtle, it was visualized and made clear that the characters are in a game world. Down to the smallest details, and certainly also in retrospect. The film scores a lot of points in this area, but is also simply rock-solid. A fantastic visual setting, subtle body horror moments, Cronenberg's signature fascination with the fusion of body and technology (those game pods in the back are filthy fascinating). The cast is also fine; Jennifer Jason Leigh is sultry, enchanting, elusive. Jude Law's character serves as an ideal proxy for the viewer, and actually delivers quite a bit of good humor as well. Something I wasn't expecting, but it works. Great role for Willem Dafoe too, but far too short to make a real impression.

And the ending is literally perfect, with a wonderfully ambiguous last sentence. Although I do think the game is over at the end. Although that makes little difference; the point is you don't know. And is there even a substantial difference between the game and real life? Something that Leigh's character also mentions several times in the film. In any case, Cronenberg is endlessly fascinating and provides food for thought. Now more than ever. 4*.
