"Their first drive could be their last."
Two 10-year-old kids steal an abandoned police car and decide to use it for a joyride. The owner of the car, Sheriff Kretzer, is determined to get it back, as it contains something valuable.

Best Watts so far.
So including his Spider-Man movies. Before he started working on those playful and energetic films, we got some rawer films that are in many ways different from Watts' superhero additions. Clown was a bit less, but this Cop Car has succeeded again.
Lots of complaints about the slow build-up, but I found this one intriguing. I also found it quite exciting when those kids were driving a police car on the road. More exciting than the somewhat harder second part in any case, but apparently that doesn't really come across to fellow MM users. Too bad, because I thought it was well put together.
Tightly directed from start to finish. Almost no soundtrack and a calm build-up. The first 45 minutes are mainly an introduction, but quite tightly executed and solidly edited. Acting is very good, only I found the running Bacon a bit strange.
Visually it's pretty bare and dry, but that's part of it. It is mainly the editing that is so tight that it is obscured. The lack of details is thus forgiven. The children are very vulgar for their age, but they will of course exist too. Furthermore, the film wants to appear very realistic, but it is all completely unbelievable in terms of progress, so that does not quite work.
The guys are very well cast, actually play out the adult cast. You don't see that often, but it's still possible. In the second part there is some more violence in the story to eventually lead to a violent climax, but it is not all very explicit. The tone is louder than the violence.
I thought it was a fun movie. Solidly directed, in my opinion without a doubt the best quality film by Watts so far. Nice and dusty. Not many directors can make them like this anymore, but judging by the score, there is no interest in that either unfortunately.

Rather simple film perhaps but very charming, in terms of the decisions our young protagonists make or the mindset they have. Bacon is good as a bad guy. Land kicks stand out and there is a successful supporting role for the lady who passes twice with appropriate radio station standing up.
Average in my opinion too low for this fun in-between film.

Very light-hearted but also a good film. Not very high quality, but certainly enjoyable. When reading the synopsis and at the start of the film, I had the impression that the sheriff was going to kill the children. The plot was somewhat different, though we'll never know what he would have been up to without the shooting.
The film also contains some humor and is playful. It must be almost every aspiring teen's dream to be able to experiment with police equipment. So they take it well. Like I said, a nice snack. It also doesn't take too long and the film also starts pretty quickly about what it is about, namely: stealing a police car.
Not much is known about the sheriff's motives and background, but it doesn't have to be. The focus is on the two boys and their mischief. It doesn't have to be more than that.
