Becky plot

"There once was a little girl..."

Thirteen-year-old Becky goes on a weekend getaway with her widowed father Jeff. After her mother's death, Becky, who has emotionally cut herself off from the rest of the world, hopes to strengthen her bond with her father. Jeff sees the outing as an opportunity to introduce Becky to his new girlfriend. There is not much time to create a bond between the ladies. Four dangerous strangers stand at the door of their holiday home.

Lulu Wilson does her best and does not put Becky down undeservedly. But the film is too long-winded, the stupid and unnatural actions and reactions make it difficult to empathize and the dialogues are often really lousy. In itself nice to see Kevin James as a bad guy, but with what the script gives him, it is difficult to make an impression.

The setting is fine, but very cliche. And the camera work and editing are hit and miss. Sometimes cool, but just as often sloppy and vague.

A meager five for me.

A 13-year-old who gets the better of four neo-Nazis and finishes one with the propeller of a boat, a 2m-plus behemoth who punches a 13-year-old full in the chest and look, our solemn communicant can also drive. Realistic! There is quite a lot of nonsense appearing nowadays that people then swallow easily. If they had still said a 17-year-old or something, or if they had used more comedic touches, or if they had given Greta Thunberg the lead role, this would probably have been a more acceptable film.
For now : agree with my predecessor; questionable entertainment that also comes across as very ridiculous. The fact that it is brutal and bloody does not matter that much anymore, but that is about the only thing that this modern exploitation still scores a few points on.

Becky.

In itself it's a nice idea to put a cute little girl in the role of Macaulay Culkin and then make it a little less cute, but to make it really work it had to be much, much more over the top. Yes, the kills are nice bone, but the one with the lawnmower is just too much repetition. Should have stuck with the super soaker, I think. Or had only used things from the school pencil. Well, the latter works quite well, although that is mainly due to the timing.

And yes, there will be a second part. I just hope that there isn't another long-winded intro for that. And let the makers take a look at Død Snø 2, to get some inspiration on how to do a really nice over the top kill.
