A History of Violence plot

"Tom Stall had the perfect life … until he became a hero."

Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) lives a quiet life with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and their two children in a small town in the United States. An unexpected and gory incident at his restaurant suddenly puts him in the spotlight. He gets a lot of media attention as a "hero" and that arouses the interest of a number of notorious criminals. They think they recognize an old gangster in him, who disappeared without a trace years ago, and with whom they still have a bone to pick. Tom says he doesn't know what they're talking about. Tension rises, including in Tom's family, as the criminals turn up the pressure. Is he the peace-loving husband and father they know?

The story is not very special and in its violent moments not even believable, but the story is so well written and so well acted that the film captivates from start to finish. The theme of identity (who are you really, what is your mask and can you change?) is a bit cliché but also gives the necessary depth. All in all, a very nice movie. More than four stars.

Well, that was an hour and a half watching fiction. All quite unlikely. Beautiful family; drop dad like a brick. I thought the action scenes were OK. And Bello.... then I'll watch a real nature film. For the rest I agree with the <=2.5* voters.

Very good. However, it usually starts with the smalltown atmosphere, the happy family where the couple has an exciting sex life and is surrounded by loving children. This is how thousands of movies start. But behind the good family man lurks a predator. That becomes clear when he shoots two criminals with great ease and becomes a hero. Shortly afterwards, some bleak types come to pay him a visit.
The title of this film has always puzzled me and relates to the primal instincts that persuade us to use violence: to protect our neighbors, to protect ourselves and to survive. Not really spectacular knowledge really, but Cronenberg makes it an entertaining thriller.
