"The End of the World is Just the Beginning"

Nice film about a man who wakes up one morning when it turns out that he is the only living person on earth. Obviously an entertaining premise that produces a number of special scenes, especially in the beginning. Unfortunately, the plot that is introduced during the last part does not make the film any better. Nice location work too.

Quite a disappointment. Perhaps because it does not seem to have survived the test of time. There are more alone-on-the-earth films, but the woodenness does have its charm in the beginning. There is humor in it which makes it enjoyable. The transition to him losing his way may be a little too quick. After a second character appears on the scene (obviously a woman) things diminish, although it is nice that it does not become too dramatic. Her acting is cringe-worthy, just like the third character. Gradually it is invented what the reason for the event could be and that is loose sand, even for an SF. Towards the end there is nothing left of the film, except for annoyances. The ending is still disappointing, why would you sacrifice 1/3 of the world's population to let the other part live, which in the end really won't make it. It was more logical to wait for the effect together. It rattles on all sides. The final scene is 'beautiful' and leaves room for theory, but it is far too superficial in the entire film for that to linger. The 'special effects' are of course hilarious, but hey, it's 30 years ago

SF film with a nice concept, but hopelessly dated and boring and sleep-inducing, especially in the second half. Expected more. I normally don't hate older films, but this film suddenly makes you realize how much films have improved since then. Bad films have always been around, but A Quiet Earth has something old-fashioned, something dated that belongs very much to the '80s. Messy camera work, uninteresting shots, strange editing and mediocre special effects.

From the moment that third person came into the picture I thought it became much less so, and the new dynamics provide few exciting or fun moments.
The concept ('being alone in the world') was later used in films such as 28 Days Later and Passengers, both of which I actually liked much more, partly because they were filmed in a more contemporary and fresh way.
