Of my two favorite online film critics, the first, Roger Ebert, has not read the books on which this film is based and, as an uninitiated, concludes that "The movie was more of a revue than a narrative, more about moments than an organizing purpose". I haven't read the books either, and I won't, based on this movie. Everything looks great, the "factory floor" of Slartibartfast (Bill Nighy's character) is impressive, and the performances by Martin Freeman and Mos Def are captivating, but after the funny start, this film doesn't captivate me for seven quarters of an hour – there Ebert's revue comes into play.

Number two James Berardinelli has read Douglas Adams' books and states that "The chief pleasure of immersing oneself in his peculiar universe isn't to see how the story ends, but to experience all of the detours along the way." That seems like a good starting point for the fan, but I'm not a fan, and I find the detours of this film only sporadically interesting, not to mention the unfortunately underdeveloped romance between Arthur and Trillian. All in all a valiant effort which I estimate may satisfy the Adamsian partly or perhaps even completely, but which I myself cannot go along with for long and certainly not constantly.

Revised and quite a let down. The film has not stood the test of time well. The visual effects are often quite ugly, as is the production design. Sure, that was largely the intent, but this is clearly not Monty Python, where the humor is so absurdly powerful that one gets away with it if the film falls short in other areas. This is all a bit obedient and especially bland, with hardly any fascinating characters and a lot of nonsense. Starts and ends nice, but in between it's a lot of biting.

I had just finished the books and wanted to see the movie. The books were also hit and miss, but with a dose of humor in the first book that I did find worthwhile. The film lacks that humor completely and the film adaptation is a mess. I wondered if it wasn't time for a reboot, because with this story you can still make a nice movie. But this is only from 2005, so it will take a while. Filmed with little ambition that deserves better. Too bad, because Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin and Zooey Deschanel were cast quite well.
