In an alternative New Zealand known as Nuovo Zelandia, we see how humans and vampires coexist peacefully in the 1960s, and where the leeches are the next step in human evolution. This delicate balance is threatened by a flu epidemic that decimates humanity, and moves a vampire back to preying on humans. The church sends Silus (Dougray Scott) to capture the runaway vampire Edgar. Silus teams up with a police officer (Burrows) and discovers that Edgar is carrying dark secrets.

Humans and Vampires have lived in harmony... Until now...

If you put 'from the creators of Lord of the Rings' on a large scale then I start to have some doubts, but despite this I am a reasonable fan of these kind of fantasy movies with vampires. Unfortunately, my doubts were justified and the film failed.

The story of Perfect Creature actually starts almost the same as that of Underworld. There is a virus, and the two races that the film will be talking about must work together to save the world because one of the two races has gone bad. All very standard and Perfect Creature contains no surprises. The only difference with other of these kind of movies is that the vampires are not the bad guys for once, but one plus can't save the movie of course.

Visually, Perfect Creature is not that bad, although it is sometimes portrayed terribly ugly. For example, when we see Brother Edgar commit his first murder and that little boy catches him. Edgar flees and climbs up. That looks so terribly fake at that moment, especially because the entire climb is deliberately accelerated. The alternative sixties atmosphere is half successful, although I didn't realize it was taking place at that time.

But the film is also a bit disappointing in terms of acting. Scott is way too boring and apparently has no emotions and Burrows doesn't look bad but was cast just for her looks. Leo Gregory was the revelation of the entire film. He manages to portray Brother Edgar in a very successful and deranged way. Rest of the cast also alternated with highs and lows.

Still worth watching for Leo Gregory and the visual part. You don't have to do it for the story.

2*

The sets and special effects are amazingly well done, the city looks 18th century, with a Gothic look, yet they use modern techniques, strange...

The movie starts a bit slow but gets better and better, which is a good sign.

It's not a great Vampire movie but for fans of the genre it's definitely worth checking out.

6/10.

I think this director is going to deliver great Blockbusters, based on this second film of his.

It's a very beautiful movie. Although it does have its moments when it is boring. So a b movie
