I, Robot plot

"One man saw it coming"

In the Chicago of 2035, robots are part of everyday life. They serve the people and are blindly trusted by them, because they are programmed according to the three laws of robotics. These determine that the technological feats cannot harm people. Detective Del Spooner, however, has a different opinion. He must solve the murder of the brilliant scientist Alfred Lanning and he suspects that the culprit is a robot. As Spooner's investigation progresses, he realizes that all of humanity is in danger.

“You know, somehow, "I told you so" just doesn't quite say it.”

Strong film with an intriguing premise. Robots that make our lives easier are getting more and more human traits, and are increasingly making their own decisions. There are three laws that the robots have to abide by, but can the increasingly intelligent robots get around that? And is man's greatest enemy, man himself?

Interesting questions that are asked in a light-hearted way in I, Robot. But director Proyas is mainly interested in a lot of action, a lot of Will Smith and a lot of visual splendor. The robots look really beautiful and the action scenes are sometimes obviously CGI, but exciting. Smith has enough charisma to carry these kinds of films on his own and Moynahan is sometimes unintentionally hilarious as icy and somewhat otherworldly Susan. The big star of the film is of course the robot Sonny, a beautiful creation of the makers. I, Robot is an action-packed Will Smith vehicle with an interesting vision of the future.

It is a film that is made up of clichés and ideas stolen elsewhere, but the film is also very entertaining (so well conceived and put together): the story is fun and exciting and every now and then you are also asked a philosophical question that your brain can gnaw on so what more could you want as a viewer? It is difficult to rate such a film: the critical mind or lack of authenticity demands a low mark, the entertainment or the heart a high mark. But since authenticity and intelligence are already valued too highly, I'm only following my heart, so four stars! After all, I am a human and not a robot!
