Those who are ugly are rejected, those who are beautiful are worshipped.

He who is ugly hides and fills his heart with hatred towards the society that despises him, who is beautiful can live with wealth and love.

Film buffs, even not particularly musical minded, will have to admit after watching this "Phantom of the Opera" that what English speakers call "Art Direction" is admirably successful.

The musical dialogues, "Learn to be Lonely", the masquerade...are beautiful passages in this film, also beautiful because of the atmosphere creation of the Parisian opera life of the nineteenth century, the sets go from the luxurious to the ghostly of the underground sewers, the costumes and the excellent acting, with Emmy Rossum, as the successful singer with the torn heart, even receiving a Golden Globe nomination.

The lovely Emmy Rossum and the beautiful settings and costumes; then I've had enough of listing the plus points of this umpteenth film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's book. With the exception of Rossum's performance, I didn't like it much. I can't help feeling that director Schumacher was quite excited about this film. These kind of musical spectacles don't seem his thing to me.

Too much singing. Is that possible? Yes, that's possible. I don't know about the other versions of The Phantom of the Opera, but there is too much singing in this part. The vocals are not always clean either. You notice that in Patrick Wilson and Gerard Butler. Gerard does have something raw in his voice and that works well with the lyrics that required a little more power, but just singing lyrics to sing is actually not for any of the three main characters. Rossum is doing more than decently. There's a strong scene here and there, but overall, the vast majority screams the four-letter word 'boring'. For example this scene

Schumacher shows his talent there.

However, the majority of the lyrics are weak and they are also sung for 90%. A questionable choice that, in my opinion, turns out badly. The story brings little news to me, a clichéd love triangle with an ending that was written in the stars. The biggest downside is perhaps also the playing time, which should have been max. one and a half hours.
