This musical for a young audience owes its popularity to the comic songs, the absurd content and the enthusiasm of the actors. The Sherman & Sherman brothers were geniuses at coming up with catchy songs to fit the situation. A Spoonful of Sugar conveys the message that you can find pleasure in a tedious assignment. During the penguin dance, Bob Sherman's kazoo is accelerated. They also coined the word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, which is very handy to rhyme.

The story is absurd. It's pure nonsense: an umbrella for transport, a handbag much smaller than its contents, a painting in steps, penguins in London, a horse escaping the horse mill, floating with laughter, being sucked up the chimney ... The message is that a little bit of positivity can be enough to handle a lot of misery. Two pennies or tuppence may be enough. The combination of live and animation works great.

Julie Andrews had already made her mark on Broadway and on television, but this was her cinema debut. It takes a lot of talent to play such a role. She even does the whistling bird herself. Dick Van Dyke's zest for life flows off. He does crazy dances and plays a double role, because he is also the banker who gets the joke just before his death. David Tomlinson is brilliant as the efficient businessman who forgets to live. Other fun side roles include Glynis Johns as the suffragette, Frankenstein's bride as the previous nanny, and Ed Wynn as the goofy uncle on the invisible strings. Eighty-four-year-old Jane Darwell played her last role as the bird lady. It's easily digestible nonsense for anyone who is young at heart.
