Nice discovery. Faux-doc in the style of films like Lake Mungo, this time surrounding a mysterious mass murder. It is a genre that seems to suit me anyway, the faux-doc approach brings with it a kind of extra layer of mystery. But the atmosphere itself is also good. Fransicsco's photo images in particular are quite unsettling. Vague, suggestive and sometimes seriously creepy. Sometimes accompanied by voice-overs or a nice humming, crackling soundtrack to only enhance the effect. The piece with the pastor's family stood out the most, it was an intense piece of cinema.

Interviews were sometimes a bit on the mediocre side thanks to some stiff acting and a rather unnecessary political undertone. Some minor flaws that occasionally interrupt the flow of the film. But otherwise highly recommended for fans of this genre, unfortunately it seems to have been forgotten here on MM. 3.5*

Nice concept, that's for sure - a mockumentary about a mass murder in a town on the border of Mexico and Arizona, but where, in an X-files-like way, more is going on. The execution of the mockumentary also looks realistic, but unfortunately that also leads to a lot of talking heads and no moving images of what happened. Lots of cool, creepy photos, that's for sure. A bit X-files like. The film also has a clear political charge, which didn't bother me (and also gave it a realistic touch), but I can imagine that not everyone is charmed by it. Still, I had hoped for a little more horror and a little less documentary.

Nice.

In many ways, Savageland reminds me of Lake Mungo, and that is a film that is high on my favorites list. Savageland therefore seemed to be a hit early on, but in the end I just liked the film and not as great as I thought Mungo.

The set-up is always fun, although it takes a while before the film gets going. That whole story about who the killer is and whether he is a killer is not that interesting. I would have preferred if the film had an immediately catchy opening, but it still takes quite a while before it really grabs the attention. If that does happen, then the film will immediately be a lot of fun.

Not that the acting is groundbreaking or the visuals are very well done, but the film itself is very good. There are indeed some very nice and strong scenes and the photos are of course nightmarish. It's cool that they can still do effective things with a small budget, and even without videos or films, just with photos. Very few films can only be scary because of the photos.

Furthermore, this film is not exactly exciting or dirty, but Guidry, Herbert and Whelan are not going for that either. These gentlemen just want to make the film as realistic, mysterious and 'real' as possible. They come a long way with that, but what they mainly succeed in is that it is all very enjoyable and has a number of effective scenes.

It's not very mysterious and the last minutes are a bit weak, but otherwise I had a good time with Savageland. It feels enough like you're watching a documentary and not a movie. It is a genre that I have not seen often (effectively), but when I do, you are in for a fun, successful film. Sometimes quite unsettling, and above all fun. An ample pass for Savageland.
