Stays great!

Yet you notice that the recent swarm of Japanese splatter got in the way of the original experience of this film. In 2000 everything was still wild and over-the-top, put a recent Nishimura next to it and it's actually still pretty good.

The advantage is that Kitamura is a much better director than what is going around at the Sushi Typhoon collective. Even without a budget he delivers creative and lavish camera work. The image quality may not be super slick, but what happens visually is definitely worth it.

Furthermore, it remains varied and fun. Funny gore, fun humor and cool fights. The two hours fly by and this remains a film that is one of the best in its genre in terms of cinematic fun.

4.5* and a extended review

Bore!

I don't see the greatness in this. A lot of walking back and forth through forests, spitting a little blood, a story below par with clumsy zombies. One can praise it, but I found it particularly weak in terms of content. However, I was strengthened by the excellent Midnight Meat Train, but the earlier work of this director is very different from MMT which was financed by a larger production house.

Much more sober and with little variation in decor and surroundings (which usually also quickly disappoints me). Versus is a film that ventures into many genres (comedy, gangster film, martial arts, horror) but excels in none of them. I also think something that would work better as an anime.
