The Omen plot

"It is the greatest mystery of all because no human being will ever solve it."

On June 6 in Rome, US Ambassador Robert rushes to the hospital because his wife Katherine is about to give birth. Unfortunately, the baby dies. But in deliberation with the priest—and without Katherine's knowledge—another newborn baby who has lost its parents is renamed Roberts and Katherine's infant son Damien. Everything goes well until he is five, except for the first visit to the church. But then a strange series of accidents begins that starts with the sitter's suicide. Robert is warned by a priest and a photographer that something strange is going on.

Starts off rather slow but quickly becomes oppressive and mysterious, with the father gradually realizing that his son Damien is more than just a boy, especially when those close to him start to die. One of the best scenes in the film was in that Etruscan cemetery. Also the ending, where two seconds of compassion were enough to fail . I forgot that the child was born from a jackal . It's a real horror classic that was really terrifying in the zeitgeist of the time, and when revised it does it again. I easily kept watching until the last minute. With a particularly strong performance by Gregory Peck who shows how to act in a horror film. A classic that, in my opinion, remains intact.

Holy shit, what a great movie this was. Never seen before and on the gamble and because of the good reviews but once cranked. And the film did not disappoint.

What is immediately noticeable is the care and quality that emanates from this product. The preliminary phase is followed, after which the first incident is quietly worked towards, and one of the strong points of the film has already been named. Namely the starting point of a normal family in a normal situation where suddenly strange things happen. And strange things they certainly are and they also make an impression, such as the incident at the children's party. Up to that point, it's always a matter of looking for what things are going to happen, but this comes so suddenly and violently that it can't possibly make an impression.

Then work is done beautifully with other events that actually only look small, can be called special, but which you can't make anything of with all sobriety because it can all be a stupid coincidence. It is all special and the photographer and the cleric play their part in increasing the mystery. The hassle at the church is haunting, predictably the reaction of the animals, to the point of humor as far as the cleric is concerned, and the photographer can almost be called Gore. But it's all nice.

Add to that a scary nanny, a great acting boy, a perfectly fitting soundtrack at times and surprising discoveries in Italy, and you still have a very nice film that has psychological horror as a guideline. Leaving aside the somewhat predictable ending, this film immediately gets a good grade. Delightfully entertained this afternoon with this movie.

Very attractive work. Director Donner opts for a fairly quick approach in The Omen: the first kill falls after roughly ten minutes, but that works here. As a viewer you already know how the fork is in the stem, so it is more efficient to create creepy situations with the concept of the child as Antichrist. The kills are quite iconic, with the glass plate decapitation at the forefront (pun not intended). But what happens to the priest, or the scene in which Damien slowly rides his bicycle towards his mother are wonderful horror moments. It all sometimes resembles a certain concept from which the later (and much worse) Final Destination films got their mustard. When they go to investigate in Italy, the film loses some momentum (the first hour is superior), but fortunately it becomes very captivating towards the end. The ending itself is also just fantastically good; no miraculous happy ending. Refreshing. 4* for this horror classic.
