Just good again.

Byrne once delivered a nice horror with The Loved Ones, but after that it remained a bit quiet. 6 years of silence for a horror director is usually not a good sign, but he still managed to make a second film. As far as I'm concerned, it's on the same level, but the horror hype has clearly died down, hence the lower score.

In terms of structure, the beginning seems a bit boring, with a young family buying a house where a somewhat obscure death occurred not so long ago. Fortunately, this is a non-standard family, with a painting daddy-metalhead and daughter who goes in the same direction. It already brings with it a somewhat different dynamic. Both Embry and Glasco are also doing very well, and Embry in particular is very good in his role.

The bad guy is the son of the family who previously lived in the house, vague guy and well portrayed by Vince. And so begins an atmospheric cat and mouse game between Vince and the family, where various classic horror elements are neatly mixed together. Very nicely shot, the soundtrack is used very well (despite the fact that I have little interest in metal) and fortunately the film does not last too long.

This film does not bring much new, but it presents the familiar ingredients just differently enough, the film is beautifully designed and does not last a second too long. Byrne can certainly make a third, but as far as I'm concerned he doesn't have to wait another 7 years.

3.5*

Painter Jesse [Ethan Embry] and his wife Astrid [Shari Appleby[ buy a house for a reasonable price, knowing that two people have died there. Shortly after they move in with their daughter Zooey [Kiara Glasco], Ray [Pruitt Taylor Vince], the confused son of the previous residents, appears at the door with the message that he has to 'come home'. Furthermore, very little happens in the first hour, in which writer and director Byrne frantically tries to hold your attention with moody music and ominous whispers. In the last fifteen minutes the brakes suddenly come off in a bloated, downright silly finale in which Byrne emphatically over-directs. Vince is fantastic and almost keeps the film afloat, but he is also no match for the weak screenplay.

After seeing The Loved Ones by this director, I wanted to watch his debut. The Devil's Candy is a film for those who appreciate metal. I can certainly do that, not that I go through life as a metalhead. So the music is a plus, but it can be a turn-off for others. Now it's not that this is extremely metal. For a few minutes, you might really focus on it. The film has a mysterious dark side somewhere, seems somewhat symbolic with what the father paints. The film tries to paint exactly an extra layer. It won't be a slasher anywhere. Not bad, but a director I will continue to follow.
