Return of the Living Dead Part 2; a movie that I used to love. I hadn't seen the first movie at the time and I really enjoyed all that nonsense. But when reviewing the Return of the Living Dead trilogy, this turned out to be one of those films that you don't like so much in later life. I can still see what I used to love about this, but now I found the film especially annoying. And now that I've also seen the first part, I see that many of the qualities of the film are copied directly from that film; Return of the Living Dead Part 2 is therefore a repetition exercise, but much more aimed at young children. It is not for nothing that the main character is a young boy this time, so that the film appeals more to the target group of The Monster Squad or The Goonies. The humor and the gore are a lot tamer, everything is a lot more careful and childish in approach.

Some things from the original pass by. Most notable is a returning James Karen and Thom Mathews, who reprise their roles in the previous film. Only this time they very often look for the irritation limit with their constant screaming and whining. It doesn't take long before you're very tired of both gentlemen. This time there is no Clu Gulager, but the main roles are for the little boy, his annoying sister and Bobby from Twin Peaks. Not a very memorable club. The only role that I still find somewhat funny is that of Doc Mandel. A bit like the role of Ernie from the first film, he gets the nicest dialogues (it also seems that Don Calfa, who played Ernie in the first film, auditioned for the part before Philip Bruns got it). Deep down I still have a small soft spot for Return of the Living Dead Part 2, but it's not a good movie. For a fun zombie comedy there are much better alternatives. Including that first Return of the Living Dead.

2.5 stars.

A lot worse than I remember from my first viewing experience. What an annoying bunch! The screaming of those louts wouldn't stop.
