Good, but not without flaws.

Hadn't read anything about it beforehand and that turned out to be a good thing. This is the kind of film that only slightly reveals its setting. I like that in itself, but I found it rather incomprehensible that Shults opts for a classic zombie setting with the meanwhile chewed up Walking Dead approach. Even with the little bit of info you get in the first scenes, you'll have an "oh, will it be that" feeling that the film isn't trying to debunk further. Then you don't win as much with a setup like this as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone who expects horror in your face will therefore remain hungry. Even those who expect "it" in "the night" should not hope for too much, the film focuses mainly on the mutual relationship between the people in the house. A trend that has now passed its peak and, as far as I'm concerned, should die out soon.

A bit of a shame, because Shults is otherwise skilled in building atmosphere. With a strong soundtrack, a couple of good actors and just enough pacing, he regularly increases the tension. There isn't much payoff, but that means that the atmosphere is seriously oppressive halfway through. The abrupt ending also fits into that picture, although the film itself could not engage me enough to let the ending pay off completely.

Not a bad horror film in itself, but the ideas that are used as cross are no longer so original and a number of Shults' choices do not turn out too well. But fun for once, especially if you go in blind.

3.5*

Not bad, but I do wonder what I was watching because very little actually happened.

The suspense started off well, but as the movie progressed it lost me. I didn't even need to know what was going on outside the house, but inside the house things happened that I didn't get an answer to and that left behind and unsatisfactory feeling.

It feels rushed. A bit like taking the first opportunity to escalate things. Would have liked this to have been a little longer and the tension between the families would have been more palpable. I myself had more with the young family. Maybe some kind of "gun" factor, or it was the fact that I couldn't fathom the eldest son's character at all and thought he was just a weird dude.

It feels like a missed opportunity. Probably also because I had expected a different kind of film based on the trailer, but it had more potential anyway. Just enough.
