No, this wasn't easy.

Wingard remains a tough nut. Capable of brilliant things, but sometimes it is also just semi-amateurish garbage (how big is the difference between this film and Pop Skull). A poor excuse is that this is his first film, but that doesn't make it any more fun to sit through.

It's not that Wingard's skills are completely absent in Home Sick, but the acting is sooooo bad that it doesn't work at all. Stiff dialogue and unrealistically poor attempts to portray strange characters (even Moseley doesn't come off well here) wring this film's neck. Visually there is very little to experience, the soundtrack is even just bad.

The idea behind the story is still nice, but the clumsy characters and mediocre gore make for a slow, often annoying film. I didn't like the humor at all (a sort of failed Rob Zombie attempt) and the lack of finishing is just more than disturbing.

No, Wingard remains hit and miss. This one is a clear miss.

1.0*

Awesome! I started it years ago (I could still remember everything with Moseley), but I never finished it. Why? No idea. My mistake has now been corrected and despite the fact that Wingard is clearly searching here and the film has a strikingly ugly SOV look... it is a mouth-watering debut. I am somewhat surprised by the many positive reactions. Usually people don't look much further than the budget, but here Wingard manages to create something that one can understand the charm of.

He of course went in a completely different direction with Pop Skull. For that reason you cannot find much from that film in this debut. You can tell that he is a director with a huge load of crazy ideas, but he still lacked the experience to draw a clear line. He certainly achieved that a few years ago with You're Next (which is most similar to this one in terms of tone). In my opinion, it is very consistent throughout his oeuvre. As far as this Home Sick is concerned, the last half hour in particular goes really well and with some explosive splatter it is the icing on the somewhat unusual cake.

You cannot accuse director Adam Wingard's debut film of a lack of ambition, because this micro-production goes nice and wide with its practical effects. The finale in particular goes quite far in terms of bloodshed and many similar makers do not dare to take that gamble, which makes Home Sick immediately stand out in a positive way. Unfortunately, that comes with poor acting and amateurish camera work. Wingard rarely takes an audiovisual path and always pushes the camera too close to the cast members' faces. With a lack of convincing characters, this becomes annoying after a while, only Bill Moseley manages to survive a bit because of the eccentric edges of his role. As the second half progresses, the film jumps off the rails and gets bogged down in a messy whole, but the fairly enthusiastically developed horror elements manage to disguise a lot of it.
