“I don't think we're dealing with a freakin' panic attack here!”

Awesome horror film by Alvarez. Evil Dead doesn't really do much new and the script is packed with the standard horror elements, but the execution is class and approaches perfection. That is mainly due to the direction and the fantastic acting of Jane Levy. Gory, explicit, hard and sometimes very shocking, as you like to see in these kinds of films. It is also important that the tension remains tight throughout the film, and the short playing time and the high tempo keep it interesting. The other actors may be a bit mediocre, but Jane Levy makes up for it with her almost maniacal playing. Alvarez delivers craftsmanship.

Holy fuck what a movie! Horror of the highest order.

Between 1981 and 2013, Evil Dead has developed from REALLY cool campy pulp to contemporary horror topper. Don't get me wrong, the original is top notch and a great classic. But this remake has become an insanely brutal film with its own face. In terms of horror between 2010 and 2020, this remake is a relief in that regard, for an otherwise not very special 10 years.

Anyway, after a short build-up it's non-stop hard horror for the rest of the film. Great creature design, an intensely creepy vibe and GORE. Gore, gore, gore. What a party. It is present in large numbers, and how brutally it is shown (That arm saw scene!!). The cast has 2 standouts: Jane Levy, but especially Lou Taylor Pucci as 70's boy Eric. And the last one in particular has a hard time. If you play a drinking game where you get to take a sip every time his body is pierced or ripped open, you'll be drunk by the end of the movie.

Incidentally, the crazy gore is not the only point to mention. As I said, it's all very creepy and everything is filmed pretty cool, which adds to the ominous atmosphere. That blood shower ending is a brilliant ending to the horror rollercoaster that turned out to be Evil Dead. A film with its own face, but respectful of the original and clearly made with a lot of love.

As usual I'm late again, because they are already working on the sequel for this film.

Revisiting this movie and I can't seem to see the movies separately. There were still some nice references such as Ash's car and the chainsaw nature. But it wasn't an Evil Dead movie for me. Without Bruce there is no Evil Dead in my view. Unfortunately.
